Battlestar Columbia was once the flagship of the Colonial fleet, but has since been replaced by the Atlantia. Constructed nearly a decade after the end of the Cylon War, she is larger, more powerful, and more advanced than older battlestars such as the Galactica.
The Columbia was docked at the (unnamed atm) shipyards when the Cylons attacked, undergoing a refit/resupply. The resupply had been completed and the Columbia was beging to shut down in order to transfer to exterior support mode so that the refit could begin. However, before all systems were completely shut down, they recieved word that a Cylon attack was under way. So they began to restart all systems, and within an hour were ready to go. However, as soon as they began to pull free of the shipyard, the Cylons jump into the system and launch an immediate and devastating attack against the shipyard and the planet. The Columbia is forced to fight her way past the Cylons and make and emergency jump.
That's all I have for now. I'm thinking of perhaps having some more ships, but I don't want to copy BSG with the whol "ragtag fleet" thing.
Another thing. My reason for naming this ship the Columbia is two fold. One, it is the name of one of the battlestars from the original series. And two, its just a small tribute to the astronauts of the Columbia. I'd like to throw in Challenger somewhere, maybe as a shuttle or a smaller ship.

Update on how she escaped.
The Columbia was docked at the Taurus Fleet (SC) shipyards when the Cylons attacked the Twelve Colonies. She had just completed a four-month overhaul and was undergoing resupply when two Cylon Basestars jumped into the system. The shipyards immediately launched all space-worthy ships to counter this threat, including two modern Battlestars, seven smaller ships, and two and a half flights of Mark V Vipers that had been schedueled for decommission. The Columbia, however, along with several other ships, is unable to join the fleet. As soon as the Basestars come within range of their long-range weaponry, they hit the shipyard with four nukes. Six ships, two of them Battlestars, are destroyed outright. Then they launch a wave of Raiders, which decimate the fleet, being able to shut down all of the newer ships. The old Mark V Vipers fare very well, despite overwheming odds, as their sytems are unaffected by the Raiders, and only 46 of the Mark Vs are destroyed out of a total of 200. The Columbia manages to clear the shipyards before the Raiders can finish it off, and makes a wild dash for space while picking up all surviving Mark V Vipers.
And that's all for now. Also, C&C would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, just got around to reading it. Sounds like it could be more of an RP, to me.

Thanks all ;D.
Geoff: Sorry, I'm not really into RPG's. And do you know any BSG forums that might be good to develope this in?
As to the Columbia being larger than the Galactica, she is 4960 feet, or 1512 meters, long, whereas the Galactica is 4640 feet, or 1414 meters, long.
I think I'll throw in a few civilian ships, but not to the point of it being a fleet. I may even just have it that only military ships escaped from this theater of the attack. I'll just have to wait and watch the miniseries as soon as I get it in and go from there.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to use the name Columbia. I've been looking at WIKIPEDIA, and I found out that the Columbia was one of the Battlestars that was destroyed. However, that still leaves me with Challenger, and I can alter my plan for how to use Challenger to Columbia.

Perhaps (and i just throwing ideas around here) some of the crew of Battlestar Columbia survived the attack as they were on the Challenger, thats one way to work in both tributes, just an idea

I don't know, perhaps some Columbia Viper pilots? That's a good thought. Tomorrow I'll probably post the mini tech manual I'm working on right now, since I should be done by then. Also, I take it that all 12 Colonies are in the same star system? That seems to be heavily implied in the miniseries.

Whoops, forgot to log in . Yeah, so I'll have that techy stuff up either later today or tomorrow. I'm in the middle of the mini series right now, it is pretty awesome. Just a small update on the ship: the Challenger is an Athena-class Battlestar. Oh, and the Galactica (and the Columbia) is a Columbia-class Battlestar, like in the original series. Oh, and I'm going ot say that the burning wreck of a Battlestar that we see when Boomer and Helo are going towards Caprica is the Columbia, the first Battlestar ever built. And some of the smaller military ships will be stuff like Intrepid-class Warstars, Titan-class Gunstars, stuff like that, unless antone thinks that adding "star" to the end of the classification name seems a bit over the top.
